Sarah Privette

As a child, I had the unique experience of emigrating from Canada to become a US citizen. While my path to family law wasn’t straightforward, the seeds were planted during that childhood experience. I started college with a goal to study psychology until a professor helped me discover my talent for law. Law school took me to Minnesota and London, where I earned both an American Juris Doctorate and an English Certificate in Law. I began volunteering for Legal Aid of NC, focusing on immigration cases. Here, I encountered many families facing domestic abuse alongside immigration challenges. This firsthand exposure ultimately led me to shift focus to family law in my private practice.

My practice now tackles complex negotiations and litigation, including high-conflict custody cases, child and spousal support, equitable distribution, and domestic violence. However, family law requires you to go beyond legal battles to get the best outcomes. As a certified parenting coordinator, I work directly with parents in high-conflict situations to find solutions and avoid court. This allows for a more holistic approach, prioritizing the well-being of the entire family. My combined legal expertise and empathy allow me to meet clients where they are and find practical solutions to real life challenges.

While clients often request “aggressive” representation, there’s a crucial difference between unwavering advocacy and unproductive aggression. I assertively advocate for client goals while maintaining professionalism. My greatest compliment? An opposing party once recommended me to their new partner, citing my ability to achieve client goals while fostering mutual respect. Empathy and a good sense of humor are key tools in navigating these often-difficult situations.

Building strong professional relationships is also a priority. I currently serve as President of the Wake County Bar Association and on the executive board of the NC Chapter of The Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts. Mentoring future lawyers allows me to share my experience and passion for the law. Being recognized by my peers as a “Super Lawyer” in the Rising Star category is an honor I hold with pride.

Outside of the courtroom, spending time with my husband and sons allows me to recharge and bring a fresh perspective to my work. We’re avid Canes fans, and I enjoy staying active with workouts, playing hockey, and travel. I want to see as much of the world as I can. Navigating foreign countries, experiencing new cultures, trying new foods, and dealing with unexpected travel surprises, all translate into valuable insights for my professional work.

I will be your tireless advocate: listening, guiding you through the process with clear communication, and striving for the best outcomes possible.
